CHIPPEWA RESERVOIR:
Your letter of the 6th, inst. relative to the title
to the SE¼ of the SW¼ Section 6, T.39N. R.7W. allotted to
Bi-da-no-kwa-to-kwe is received. The Wisconsin-Minnesota Light and Power
Company will be glad to purchase this allotment when the matter is so straightened
out that good title can be obtained.
The offer I made you in my letter of the 28th
ult. to purchase Indian allotments at $8.00 per acre, or portions of allotments
at a somewhat higher rate per acre, was made with a view of obtaining the
necessary lands without unnecessary cost or expense. The price of $8.00
per acre is somewhat more than the market value of similar lands in the
vicinity, and if our Company is compelled to resort to condemnation to
obtain allotments, we will expect that the ordinary rules of valuation
will be applied by the appraisers. I do not believe that an impartial board
of appraisers will fix a price as high as $8.00 per acre on the lands,
which are required for this project.
Very truly yours,
Charles McPherson (signed)
